Stress Relief with Swimming

Stress Relief with Swimming
December 08/2015

Stress relief with swimming can be very relaxing when done at a slow pace, gliding through the water. Or swimming can be a real physical workout when going full speed. Either way, you gain great relief from the water, releasing body stress and strain, replacing it with contentment and relation.

The Health Benefits of Swimming
Swimming is a really healthy sport and is suitable for all age groups. The water helps to support the body and injuries are less likely to occur than if practicing a land sport.

Some of the health benefits of swimming are:
  • It’s great for the heart and for your body’s muscle strength and therefore great for stress relief – healthy body, healthy mind.
  • It’s an overall body workout and helps your posture and the body’s flexibility through practicing the different strokes.
  • Stress relief is gained through the focus and coordination of the breath required to swim certain strokes.
  • Your mind is given a break while you swim – a great stress relief!

Tips for Stress Relief with Swimming
Whether you work in an office or from home, try to get away at lunch for a swim. A stressful situation becomes much more manageable once we have had a break:
  • Give yourself plenty of time so you are not rushing. The idea is for stress RELIEF– not to add more stress by rushing!
  • By going at lunch, a lot of pools are quieter and therefore less stressful. After work or in the evenings is usually a lot busier.
  • Try getting up earlier and going before work or in the morning – it helps to wake the body up and local swimming pools are usually less busy then.
  • Enjoy the swim, don’t make it a stressful race. Enjoy the gift you are offering your body by exercising. The body appreciates it, let the mind appreciate it too.
  • Get into a routine. Some days we don’t feel like exercising but we always feel better afterwards. A positive routine like swimming regularly helps stress management tremendously.
  • Swimming is great in the long term for stress relief because it helps to increase the size of the lungs. By increasing lung size our breathing becomes deeper. The deeper the breath, the more relaxed we become!
  • So get out and swim. Stress relief with swimming truly is great – and watch your stress levels drop and your happiness increase!
