Pet Safety Around the Pool and Hot Tub

Pet Safety Around the Pool and Hot Tub
October 15/2015

Swimming laps in the pool, splashing around in the water with your children, or soaking in the warm bubbling water of a hot tub are great ways to have fun and relax. To ensure happy times, follow these basic, yet important, swimming pool and hot tub safety tips from the Canadian Pool and Hot Tub Council to make your backyard leisure time as safe as possible:  safety tips  (link to Canadian Pool Council safety tips and guidelines)
But remember that safety isn’t just for people – your pet’s safety is just as important.

Though largely unreported, a sad fact is that accidental drowning of pets in the swimming pool is quite common.   Although most healthy dogs and cats have an innate ability to swim short distances, escaping from a pool may be a life and death struggle. Barking is often difficult once the pet is in the water. The untrained animal instinctively heads for the closest edge of the pool and tries to claw its way out. Clawing on concrete breaks nails, worsening panic. Water is ingested and breathing becomes laboured. The animal is exhausted within minutes.
How do I Protect my Pet?

There are several option when it comes to protecting your pet around the pool or hot tub.
  •     Personal alarms that ring if the animal falls into the water can be attached to their collars.
  •     Pool alarms can be installed in the pool that will ring if an animal falls into the water
  •     Specially designed animal ramps can be installed to help an animal get out of the pool
  •     A Safety Cover can be installed to ensure that a pet cannot enter the water

If You are a Pet Owner with a Pool, ASK YOURSELF:
  •     Is escape from the pool possible for my pet?
  •     Can my pet swim?
  •     Is my pet trained to escape?

If the answer to any of the above questions is ‘no’, then rescue of the animal within two to five minutes may be life critical.
